STEP program registration

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service from the U.S. Department of State that allows U.S.

23 steps across 7 sections

1. Create a Login.gov Account

  • Visit mytravel.state.gov or step.state.gov
  • Create a Login.gov account (the government's unified login system) or sign in with an existing one
  • Verify your email address

2. Complete Your Profile

  • Enter personal information: name, date of birth, citizenship
  • Provide contact details: email, phone number(s)
  • Add passport information

3. Register a Trip or Residence

  • Select destination country (auto-fill as you type — this refers to the country, not a specific city)
  • Enter travel dates (arrival and departure)
  • Select the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to where you will be staying
  • Provide your in-country contact information (hotel address, phone number, etc.)
  • State the purpose of travel (tourism, business, education, etc.)
  • Add an emergency contact in the U.S. for each trip

4. Submit

  • Review your information and submit
  • You will begin receiving alerts for your registered destination(s)

5. Embassy Alerts

  • Receive email alerts about safety conditions in your destination country
  • Get notified about natural disasters, civil unrest, terrorist threats, health emergencies, and other security concerns
  • Receive travel advisories and updates specific to your destination

6. Emergency Assistance

  • Helps the U.S. Embassy/Consulate locate and assist you in an emergency (natural disaster, political crisis, family emergency)
  • Facilitates evacuation coordination if needed
  • Allows the embassy to contact your designated emergency contact in the U.S. if they cannot reach you
  • Enables faster communication during crises (e.g., the embassy can send targeted messages to registered travelers in affected areas)

7. Routine Services

  • Information about local services, cultural events, and community resources (for resident enrollments)
  • Voting information for overseas U.S. citizens
