NEXUS is a joint U.S.-Canada Trusted Traveler Program operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

1. Create a TTP Account

  • Go to ttp.cbp.dhs.gov
  • Create an account and complete the online application
  • Pay the $120 non-refundable fee

2. Background Check

  • Both CBP (US) and CBSA (Canada) conduct background checks
  • Both agencies must approve the application
  • Processing times vary — can take several weeks to months

3. In-Person Interview

  • After conditional approval, schedule an interview at a NEXUS Enrollment Center
  • Enrollment centers are located at US-Canada border crossings and some airports
  • Bring valid passport and one additional form of ID
  • Both CBP and CBSA officers may interview you
  • Fingerprints and photo taken

4. Receive NEXUS Card

  • Physical NEXUS card issued with RFID technology
  • Contains your photo and membership information
  • Used at dedicated NEXUS lanes and kiosks

5. At Land Borders

  • Use dedicated NEXUS lanes at participating border crossings
  • Present your NEXUS card to the RFID reader
  • Significantly faster than regular lanes

6. At Airports (Entering Canada)

  • Use NEXUS kiosks for self-service processing
  • Scan your card or use iris recognition

7. At Airports (Entering US)

  • Use Global Entry kiosks (same as Global Entry members)
  • Scan passport, answer customs declaration questions on screen

8. For TSA PreCheck

  • Your NEXUS PASSID serves as your Known Traveler Number (KTN)
  • Add it to airline bookings for expedited security screening
