Military enlistment

Enlisting in the U.S. military involves meeting eligibility requirements, passing medical and aptitude tests, selecting a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), and completing basic training.

10 steps across 1 sections

1. Steps Process

  • Research branches and career fields — Compare Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force for culture, benefits, and available jobs
  • Contact a recruiter — Schedule an appointment; the recruiter explains requirements, timelines, and job options for your branch
  • Take the ASVAB — The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery determines which military jobs you qualify for; each branch sets its own minimum composite scores
  • Complete a background check — Criminal history, credit, and personal references are reviewed; certain offenses require waivers
  • Visit MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) — Typically a two-day process including medical exam, height/weight, vision, hearing, blood work, and urinalysis (food and lodging provided)
  • Select your MOS/rating and review your contract — A service enlistment counselor matches your ASVAB scores to available jobs; review enlistment bonuses, duty station preferences, and contract length
  • Take the Oath of Enlistment — Swear to defend the Constitution and obey the UCMJ
  • Enter DEP or direct ship — Delayed Entry Program (DEP) reserves your slot for up to one year; direct ship sends you to basic training immediately
  • Complete Basic Combat Training (BCT) — Duration varies by branch (8-13 weeks); covers physical fitness, weapons, drill, and military discipline
  • Attend Advanced Individual Training (AIT) — Job-specific technical training following basic; length depends on MOS
