Pet insurance

25 steps across 7 sections

1. Accident-Only Plans

  • Cover injuries from accidents: broken bones, torn ligaments, swallowed objects, poisoning, bite wounds
  • Cheapest option: $10-$20/month
  • Best for: budget-conscious owners who want emergency coverage only

2. Accident and Illness Plans (Most Popular)

  • Cover accidents PLUS illnesses: cancer, infections, diabetes, kidney disease, allergies, digestive issues
  • Account for 85% of all pet insurance claims because illnesses generate the highest vet bills
  • Cost: $20-$70/month for dogs, $10-$40/month for cats (with $250 deductible, 80% reimbursement)
  • Best for: most pet owners — this is the standard recommendation

3. Wellness/Preventive Add-Ons

  • Reimburse routine care: annual checkups, vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, dental cleanings
  • Cover one-time costs: microchipping, spaying/neutering
  • Usually an optional add-on to accident-and-illness plans, not standalone
  • Adds $10-$25/month to your premium
  • Worth it if: you consistently use all covered services; otherwise the math often doesn't work out

4. What Counts as Pre-Existing

  • Any illness or injury your pet showed signs of BEFORE enrollment or during the waiting period
  • Includes conditions not yet formally diagnosed — if symptoms are in the vet records, it counts
  • Insurers review old vet records when you file your first claim

5. Curable vs. Incurable Pre-Existing Conditions

  • Curable (ear infections, UTIs, vomiting): Many insurers will cover after a symptom-free period (180-365 days)
  • Incurable (diabetes, heart disease, hip dysplasia): Generally excluded permanently by most insurers
  • Exception AKC Pet Insurance covers both curable and incurable pre-existing after 365 consecutive days of coverage

6. Ideal Timing

  • Best Enroll puppies/kittens at 8-12 weeks old, before any health issues develop
  • Good Any time your pet is young and healthy
  • Still worthwhile Adult pets without pre-existing conditions
  • Harder to justify Senior pets (9+ years) due to high premiums and likely pre-existing exclusions

7. Age Limits

  • Many carriers have eliminated maximum enrollment ages
  • Some restrict senior pets (9+) to accident-only plans
  • Pets Best and several others have no upper age limit
